Late Talkers & Delayed Speech
Early Intervention for Communication Development in Sydney
Is Your Child Progressing as Expected?
It’s completely normal for parents to feel concerned when their child isn’t talking as much or as clearly as other children their age. Every child grows at their own pace, but there are key speech and language skills that help us understand when a child may benefit from extra support. Seeking help early is one of the strongest ways to set your child up for long-term communication success.
At Grow and Tell Therapy, our Sydney speech pathologists specialise in supporting late talkers, offering warm, play-based and evidence-driven therapy that helps your child build confidence, connection and communication.
What Does It Mean to Be a Late Talker?
A late talker is a child between 18 and 30 months who is developing normally in other areas (like play and movement) but is using fewer words than expected for their age.
Being a late talker does not mean your child is “behind forever.” It simply means they need targeted support to help their language catch up. Early support can prevent ongoing challenges and give your child the best chance to thrive at home, daycare and later at school.
The Power of Early Intervention
Some children do catch up on their own, but many do not. Research shows that early intervention leads to better long-term outcomes for speech, language and social development.
Waiting too long can delay progress during the most important years for brain and language development.
Children with ongoing language delays may experience challenges later with:
Reading and Writing - Delayed language is strongly linked to literacy challenges.
Social Skills- Frustration with communication can impact their ability to engage with peers and manage their emotions.
School Readiness - Entering school without a strong language foundation makes following instructions and participating in the classroom more challenging.
Why We Don't "Wait and See"
Our Approach to Helping Your Late Talker
Our therapy is designed to feel natural, playful and engaging. We focus on building communication through enjoyable interactions while empowering parents with practical strategies they can use every day.
The Assessment
The first step is a comprehensive, play-based Speech Pathology Assessment. This helps us understand your child's specific communication profile, identify the root cause of the delay, and create a personalised plan.
Evidence-Based Therapy
We utilise evidence-based programs, such as Hanen's It Takes Two to Talk, which are specifically designed to empower parents to create language-rich environments at home.
Funding and Support
We are proud to be a specialist provider, supporting families accessing therapy through various funding models. If your child is registered with the scheme, we offer dedicated NDIS Speech Pathology support.
